What is Purply?

Purply is a new ingredient made from Ciona that makes it possible to eat the same as always, but with a significantly lower climate footprint.

Same great taste. Better for the climate.

Purply is a new ingredient made from Ciona, a new raw material with a low climate footprint. Ciona lives in the sea and provides animal proteins and other important nutrients. At the same time, the Purply ingredient has a neutral taste which makes it suitable for dishes where we otherwise use minced meat.

In addition, Ciona can be grown in the Nordics with climate footprint of only 0.22 kg CO2-eq/kg. This is great news for anyone who wants to reduce their meat consumption for the sake of the climate. With Purply, it is possible to cook well-known dishes that taste as they should. If you care about eating more sustainably, you should choose Purply.

Who are we?

The food production the world needs

The sea is the food source of the future, and according to the UN, at least 10 percent of global food production should come from the sea. Today it is only 2 percent, while agricultural areas on land are already under severe pressure worldwide. We must manage the resources we have sustainably.

With long traditions in aquaculture and fantastic marine natural resources, we have all the conditions to succeed with low-trophic farming here in the Nordics. Ciona grows naturally along the Norwegian and Swedish coasts. Growing them in such perfect environments also has a positive effect on marine ecosystems, water quality, and marine life. This is the food production the world needs.

Who are we?

Natural. Nordic. Nice.

Pronofa, which is behind the Purply brand, has employees in both Norway and Sweden and is the first in the world to grow Ciona on a large scale. All forms of food production leave their mark on climate and nature, but cultivation of Ciona has actually been shown to have a positive impact on the marine ecosystem.

The world will need 70% more food by 2050

Consideration for both the climate and nature is incredibly important when we know that we have to change what we eat to more sustainable alternatives. By 2050, we will globally need 70 percent more food than we can produce today – and with almost zero emissions.

Our ambition is to help people all over the world make food in a way that positively affects the environment and our surroundings. Therefore, we must make it easy to make smart choices. For us, it's about making Purply a natural part of – to begin with – the Nordic diet. Every meal you eat with Purply, is like a personal climate initiative!
