What is Purply?

Purply is a new source of food, based on the marine animal
raw material Ciona, which has an exceptionally low climate
footprint.

Same great taste.
Better for the climate.

Purply is an ingredient based on Ciona, a raw material from the sea with a very low climate footprint. It is naturally low in fat and provides animal proteins, minerals, and other essential nutrients.

Purply has a neutral taste, making it well-suited for dishes where other types of minced or processed products have traditionally been used.

With Purply, you can make the same dishes as you always have. The biggest difference is that Ciona can be cultivated in the Nordic region with a climate footprint of only 0.22 kg CO₂-eq/kg.

Making a difference never tasted better!

The food production the world needs

The sea is the food source of the future, and according to the UN, at least 10 percent of global food production should come from the sea. Today, it is only 2 percent.

Simultaneously, the global agriculture is under pressure and we must manage all available resources for food production more sustainably. The Nordic region has abundant marine natural resources and a long tradition of aquaculture. Naturally, we also have the necessary conditions to succeed with low-trophic aquaculture, including Ciona cultivation.

This is the kind of food production the world needs.

Natural. Nordic. Nice.

Pronofa has employees in Norway and Sweden and is the first in the world to initiate large-scale cultivation of the tunicate species Ciona.

We use this raw material to produce a complete minced product under the Purply brand.

Ciona cultivation results in very low climate emissions and provides several positive ripple effects on local marine ecosystems.

The world will need 70% more food by 2050

Today, food production accounts for as much as 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Taking climate and environmental considerations into account is therefore becoming increasingly important. We know that we must shift our diets in a more sustainable direction in the future.

By 2050, according to the United Nations, we will need 70 percent more food than we produce today —primarily due to population growth—and with almost no increase in climate emissions.

Can we change the way we eat in a way that is better for our planet? The answer is yes, but it must be easier for us to make smart choices. This includes making Purply a natural part of as many people’s diets as possible.

Every meal you eat with Purply is like a personal climate action.
